“I have dark circles” is one of the most common things we hear at consultations. Then it turns out half of those people actually have under-eye bags, not dark circles. Or both. The difference isn't just the name: the two problems have different causes and need different approaches.
Dark circles: dark shadows under the eyes
Dark circles are a change in skin colour under the eyes: brownish, bluish or purple shadows. They come from thin skin that lets blood vessels show through, pigmentation, tiredness, genetics or a hollow under the eye that casts a shadow. A face with dark circles looks tired even when you're well rested.
Bags: puffiness under the eyes
Bags are bulges, so a problem of volume, not colour. They form when the supporting tissue around the eye weakens and fat bulges outward, or when fluid collects in the area. They are worse in the morning and become permanent with age.
How to tell them apart?
- Colour without a bulge: dark circles
- A bulge that casts a shadow: bags
- Worse in the morning, better during the day: probably fluid retention
- Mirror test: tilt your head up; if the shadow disappears, it's a hollow and a shadow, not pigment
Why does the difference matter?
Because a “dark circle” cream won't reduce bags, and a de-puffing mask won't remove pigment. With bags the aim is to tighten the skin and boost lymphatic drainage, with dark circles to improve circulation and skin quality. An INDIBA treatment around the eyes does both: it boosts microcirculation and lymphatic drainage and renews collagen in the thin skin under the eye.
We have a separate guide for each problem: how to get rid of dark circles and how to get rid of under-eye bags.
