The first question everyone asks: can stretch marks disappear completely? The honest answer is no, because stretch marks are scars. But they can become so pale and shallow that only you notice them, and that is a goal you can realistically reach. Here's what you need to know about stretch marks.
How do stretch marks form?
Stretch marks are tears in the deeper layer of the skin that form when the skin stretches faster than its collagen and elastin network can adapt. The most common triggers are pregnancy, sudden weight changes, growth spurts in puberty and training with rapid muscle gain. They also run in families.
Red or white: a big difference
- Red or purple stretch marks are fresh. There is still circulation in them and the tissue is active, so they respond best to treatment. This is the stage where the most can be done.
- White or silvery stretch marks are mature, old scars the skin has “sealed”. They can still be improved, but more slowly and to a lesser degree.
What can you expect from treatment?
The aim of treatment is to get the skin to build new collagen inside the stretch mark, so it becomes narrower, shallower and closer to the colour of the surrounding skin. INDIBA radiofrequency does this by warming the deeper layers of the skin and prompting fibroblasts to repair it, completely painlessly and with no downtime, which sets it apart from more aggressive methods such as laser.
INDIBA is also used for tissue repair in injuries and scars in general, which we wrote about in the article on recovery from sports injuries.
The combination that works best
- Start as early as possible, while the stretch marks are still red
- A series of treatments, usually 10 or more, depending on the area and the age of the stretch marks
- Hydration and skin care between treatments
- Patience: tissue renewal takes months, not weeks
