Photoaging: how the sun accelerates skin aging and what you can do about it

Content
Most of the visible signs of skin aging are not a matter of age, but of the sun. How to recognize photoaging, how to slow it down and whether the damage can be repaired.

Two women of the same age can look as if they are a decade apart. The difference is usually not in genetics or expensive creams, but in the sun. Dermatologists call this process photoaging and estimate that it is responsible for most of the visible signs of skin aging.

What is photoaging?

Photoaging is the premature aging of the skin caused by UV radiation. While natural aging occurs slowly and evenly, UV rays accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin and damage the cells that produce them. The results accumulate over years and become visible at some point.

How to recognize photoaging on the skin?

  • Deeper wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes and lips, earlier than the years would have brought them
  • Pigment spots on the face, hands and décolleté
  • Rougher skin texture and enlarged pores
  • Loss of strength, especially on the cheeks and jawline
  • Permanent redness and broken capillaries

The best test is comparison: look at the skin on the inside of your upper arm, which almost never sees the sun. That's your skin without photoaging.

Can photoaging be slowed down?

Yes, and it's very effective. The first rule is consistent sun protection throughout the year, which we wrote about in the article about protect your skin before the beach. The second is skincare with proven ingredients like retinol and vitamin C.

And can the damage already done be repaired?

Partially yes. The skin has the ability to renew itself, it just needs to be stimulated. INDIBA radiofrequency heats the deeper layers of the skin and awakens fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen. Through a series of treatments, the skin becomes firmer and denser, and fine wrinkles are reduced. No needles, no recovery and no sun ban, which is what sets it apart from most other treatments.
